8th Grade Language Arts:
Books: Voyages in English. Supplementary materials will also be utilized and kept in students' binders/google classroom.
Prestwick House Greek and Latin Roots
Focus: Grammar and Rhetorical Skills
Class will begin with a grammar lesson; students will write each day. Vocabulary, including Latin/Greek roots, will be studied.
Grammar Skills:
Prepositions: Single and Multiword Prepositions, troublesome prepositions
Nouns: singular and plural, possessive, subjects and objects
Adjectives: descriptive, demonstrative, interrogative and indefinite, comparative and superlative
Pronouns: person, number, subject and object pronouns, possessive pronouns and adjectives, agreement of pronouns and antecedents, interrogative and demonstrative pronouns, indefinite pronouns
Verbs: transitive and intransitive, active and passive voice, Moods: indicative, imperative, emphatic and subjunctive, agreement of subject and verb
Verbals: Gerunds, Infinitives, Participles
Adverbs: Types, Comparative and Superlative
Students will read and annotate an Article of the Week most weeks. These are informational texts with questions/writing assignments that accompany it. Links are found on the front page of this weebly. Article of the Week will be assigned on Monday and due on Thursday.
Students will write a variety of papers this year:
- Personal Narrative
- Reader's Response - Creative Writing
- How-to Article - Argument Writing
- Career Research Paper - Business Letter
- Descriptive Writing - Dear Author/Letter about Literature Contest
These papers utilize research skills as well as writing skills.
Students’ grades are calculated using a point system.
At the end of each trimester, a student’s grade is determined by dividing that student’s earned points by the total points possible for that trimester. Grades are updated at least every week and students are encouraged to monitor their own grades via PowerSchool. All assignments should reflect the student’s best effort and be of the highest quality.
